{emergency preparedness}

***
No niin, paljon parempi olo jo. Ajatukset suunnattu hyviin asioihin...
***
Some of you might remember that we had a fire scare in our house not very long ago. Our fire alarm went off in the middle of the night and scared us. It was a false alarm but I ended up having nightmares that night that the fire was real or that we were dying from carbon monoxide poisoning etc. I'm happy to report that Jay changed our fire alarms. They are brand new and also include carbon monoxide alarms.
After that night, I put our very insufficient 72 hour emergency kit in our living room (two big plastic containers) and decided that they are going to stay there until I get my butt in gear and finish this important project. Our church has been teaching forever now about being prepared and I'm ashamed to say that even though I have felt it's very important, so far I haven't done much to be prepared. We see in the news more and more reasons why every family should have a preparedness plan and emergency kits. Here in Canada, there's been much talk about floods lately as there have been major floodings as snow has melted. Many people had to be evacuated. Soon the summer forest fire season will start and once again we'll hear stories of people having to leave their homes quickly. Our world is a fragile place and it gives you much peace of mind if you are as prepared as you can be. I'm determined to finally heed my church leaders (and the government) and do my best to get prepared. How about you? What have you done so far and do you have any tips for the rest of us?
Here are some web sites that can get you started:
Get Prepared by Canadian Government (the Emergency Guide is great)
emergency preparedness info by LDS church (includes tips on storing water, etc)
prepare your home and family by Red Cross (lots of great info, they even have prepardness lessons for children in each age group)
***
So - start now. Start with a container and slowly accumulate things to put in it. I got Jay the crank up radio/flashlight as a gift one year and Jay bought the other items for our family for a Christmas gift last year. Who needs more junk. Peace of mind is a lovely gift. I'll keep updating you on my progress and maybe it'll motivate some of you to get started too.

"Many more people could ride out the storm-tossed waves in their economic lives if they had their... supply of food... and were debt-free. Today we find that many have followed this counsel in reverse: they have at least a year's supply of debt and are food-free."

Laitetaan tanne vaikka tallaista vapun kunniaksi. Jotkut ne osaa tehda hianoja cupcakes. En kylla tieda tykkaisinko syoda moisia.
En muuten edes muistaisi etta on vappu ellen asiasta olisi saanut muistutusta netissa.
Lyhyesti mainittakoon vaan etta minunkin perheessa on alkoholisteja kuten muidenkin suomalaisten. Itse en kesta enaa en tipan tippaa kannisten orinoita. Hauskan pitoa muka. Joo niin just. Inhoan viinaa yli kaiken. Niista tulee karseet muistot aina mieleen.
Itse olen alkoholia kayttanyt ehka yhteensa noin 10 kertaa (en muista tarkalleen). Humalassa olen ollut kuten muutkin. Kaikki tapahtui kun olin nuori (15 - 17v). Siita vaan alaikaisille viinoja. :( ALYTTOMIA asioita on tullut tehtya humalassa muutaman kerran. Viina vie aivot mennessaan.
Viimeinen humalani tuli nopeasti ja haipyi yhta nopeasti. Olin kaverini kanssa lukion vanhojen paivaa juhlimassa. Alaikaisille annettiin kapakassa viinoja tottakai.
Meita aklotti meidan kaytos. Sitten alettiin miettimaan miksi juomme. Emme kumpikaan siita koskaan olleet ihmeemmin valittaneet. Tajusimme miten alytonta juominen loppujen lopuksi on. Miten humalassa ei tieda mita tulee tehtya. Alysti traagisia tarinoita sita todistamassa. Yhdessa sina paivana paatimme ettemme juo enaa. Olimme 17-vuotiaita! Yksi parhaista paatoksista joita elamassani olen koskaan tehnyt. Juomista en ole kaivannut en tippaakaan. Mulle maistuu alkoholittomat juomat taysin (vesi kaikkein parhaiten) ja en tarvi edes pikku humalaa elamaa "piristamaan". Osaan juhlia ilman viinoja.
Voisin kertoa kamalia muistoja lapsuudestani. Mutten aio. Kylla te kaikki tiedatte miten lapsetkin karsii monissa perheissa.
Just ja just jaksan esim sukuhaissa tms jos joku juo.
Miten ihanaa ettei meidan perheessa juoda. Y
Tiedan eraan henkilon jolle noin on kaynyt. Han lapsena karsi alkoholistin toimista (oma aiti) ja sitten hanen omalla lapsellaan on alkoholi ongelma. Voi mita surua tunnen hanen puolestaan. Itsesta tuntuu etta tulisin hulluksi jos viela pitaa kayda moista ruljanssia lapi. Ja viela oman lapsen kanssa.
Nyt on mun mieli kovin musta tasta kaikesta. En todellakaan ollut suunnitellut taman kirjoittamista. Se tuli taas ihan itsestaan. Pitaa yrittaa suunnata ajatukset positiivisiin juttuihin tanaan ettei nama ajatukset ja omat lapsuusmuistot paase tuhoamaan enaa yhtakaan minuuttia mun elamasta. Tarpeeksi tuhoa on tehty jo.

Have a history teacher explain this if he/she can.
Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846.
John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946.
Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860.
John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960.
The names Lincoln and Kennedy each contain seven letters.
Both were particularly concerned with civil rights.
Both wives lost a child while living in the White House.
Both Presidents were shot on a Friday.
Both Presidents were shot in the head.
Lincoln's secretary was named Kennedy.
Kennedy's secretary was named Lincoln.
Both were assassinated by Southeners.
Both were succeeded by Southeners named Johnson.
Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, was born in 1808.
Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908.
John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln, was born in 1839.
Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated Kennedy, was born in 1939.
Both assassins were known by their three names.
Both names are composed of fifteen letters.
Lincoln was shot at the theatre named 'Kennedy'.
Kennedy was shot in a car called 'Lincoln'.
Booth ran from the theatre and was caught in a warehouse.
Oswald ran from a warehouse and was caught in a theatre.
Booth and Oswald were assassinated before their trials.
A week before Lincoln was shot, he was in Monroe, Maryland.
A week before Kennedy was shot, he was with Marilyn Monroe. *This one is not true, I guess, but pretty cool if most of this stuff is true.*

Abraham Lincoln struggled with bouts of depression and used humor as therapy. His ability to laugh at himself was revealed during a political debate in which his opponent called him "two-faced". Lincoln replied, "I leave it to my audience. If I had another face, do you think I'd wear this one?"

Some time ago I was a passanger on an airplane that was coming in for a landing. As we neared the airport, the other passangers and I started to realize that we were traveling much faster than normal. I could feel the anxiety level in the plane start to rise. Suddenly the airplane hit the ground with great force and then began taxiing down the runaway. Shaken, we passangers sat in stunned silence until the captain's voice came over the sound system: "Take that, you bad, bad runaway!" We all erupted in laughter. With a humorous viewpoint and a shared laugh, an uncomfortable situation had become bearable."

{comic & entertainment expo}

***
So good to have Jay back home. He spent the weekend at the Calgary Comic & Entertainment EXPO. He was there with "the other Jay" from Happy Harbor Comics (our ex business partner and he bought our business from us). They were selling collectable toys etc but also had time to enjoy the expo. I can't remember for the life of me who was the comic artist who did this picture of Sienna and "who was this character again?". :) Jay always gets personalized art done for Sienna when he goes to these expos. These expos are fun. People dress up as movie/comic/tv show characters. There are celebrities (I would have loved to go and chat with Ray Park who played Darth Maul in Star Wars) and comic book artists. Jay said Sergio Aragones (who does the comic Groo, which I love!) was a really fun guy. Their hotel's fire alarm went off at around 1am and everyone had to go outside and wait when the fire department searched the hotel. I guess Sergio was taking tons of pictures for his blog and joking around. Someone had used the fire distinguisher (no fire though) and that had set the alarm off. When Sienna gets older, we'll have to go to the San Diego EXPO together. In California, these expos are huge. Fun, if you don't take things too seriously. Personally, I'd love to dress up in fun costumes and just be silly. :) This reminds me of the night when Star Wars Episode I came out and we got to go to a special screening with our 501st Legion friends (www.501st.com, check out the off duty photo gallery! :)). They are a group who dress up in totally real looking Star Wars outfits. They got a permission from George Lucas himself and he approves their costumes. They do volunteer work. Robin was in heaven when a stormtrooper "arrested" him at one of our store's yearly VIP Party. Fun, fun.

{spring, summer, fall, winter}

***
What do you do with a kid all day when she can't walk and playing with same old toys isn't fun enough? This is what I did today. First I printed the bare tree picture on blue paper, then made the various grounds, tree leaves, weather pictures, etc. I laminated everything for durability. Sienna had so much fun changing the season. The most fun part was raking leaves into a pile (with a pretend rake - a doll's plastic fork). I'm going to keep adding things to this project - bunnies, other animals, people skiing... The sky is the limit. You can make different scenaries too (a beach, a park...). Fun way to talk about different seasons and what you do in what weather.

{great idea for kids}

***
Great idea:
Use an underbed storage box with a lid to make a sandbox for kids. For an added bonus, hide little trinkets and pretty rocks in the sand. Kids can dig for treasure! :) Sienna would be entertained for a long time.
I found the idea from: www.ohdeedoh.com.
Someone who left a comment claimed that sand can be toxic for kids so check to be safe. ??? I don't know about that. Kids play with sand on the beach and everywhere. What's wrong with sand? Maybe there are different types of sand or something. So be mindful if you plan to do this, I guess. ???
Later: I saw Toys R Us advertise play sand in their flyer.

Fun childhood memory: I was about 11 or 12 and I was smitten by a boy in my class. I knew where he lived. I always chose the bus that took the long route in hopes of seeing this boy in his front yard. Oh the joy if I happened to catch a glimpse of him. :)

{a peek at a typical Canadian neighborhood}

***
I was still being weighed down by the topic of the previous posting today. I needed to snap out of it and get on with life. What better way to do it than to go for a lovely spring walk. Today was +21C with a gentle breeze. Perfect. Any warmer than this and it'll be too hot for me. I don't do well in heat.
I brought my camera with me so I can show you what a typical neighborhood looks like over here. I've lived here for so long that it's hard for me to notice all the differences between Finland and Canada, for example. Will you please let me know how you find my neighborhood different from yours and if you see anything that sticks out to you.
Yksi juttu mika minusta on erilaista on miten taalla on kaikkialla siististi leikattua nurmikkoa. Siistiahan tama kylla on.

These kind of ravines are typical here where we live. They are close to housing but it's still nice and peaceful.
***

***
I took lots of pictures of houses for ya. The lots cost lots of money so houses are typically built close together (older neighborhoods have more space between houses). Backyards are quite big though. I'd prefer the garage to be at the back of the house. Porches are much more welcoming and make you feel like you want to visit with your neighbors.
***
***
No back alley behind these houses so when it's garbage day, people leave their garbage bags/cans in the front for the garbage truck.

***

***
Some people even have their very own little lake. Manmade. All the new areas seem to have little manmade lakes in them. Many of them are for everyone's use, with a walkway around them. Like a park. Fun to go feed ducks and other birds.

There are many East Indians in Canada. Sikh temples, men with turbans... I asked this old lady if I could take a picture of her. She didn't speak English but when she saw my camera she posed for me. Canada is a cultural melting pot. People from all over the world here.
***
***
So there. Let me know if you'd like to see more pictures of housing etc. Or was this boring?
The houses in these pictures are about 20 years old. I'll show you pictures of some of the newer neighborhoods too, if you'd like. And of acreages (massive houses on huge lots). Many farmhouses around too. :) Let me know if you're interested.

{please read this posting and spread the info}

***
This is one of the hardest but the most important postings I've done so far. Please read even though the topic is a very difficult one. It is very important that we all know about this.
I turned on the tv earlier tonight. The Oprah show (www.oprah.com) was on and I thought I'd watch it for a bit. I almost turned the tv off when I realized what the topic of the show was. I am a very sensitive person who gets dramatized easily. But I could not turn the tv off. The episode was about child pornography/pedofiles. I watched it for about 20 minutes. Enough to leave me highly disturbed. I feel like crying, screaming, not wanting to live in this sometimes very SICK & EVIL world, hoping that the Millenium would come RIGHT NOW (for those of you who know what that means). I feel sick to my stomach and feel that I should throw up.
How I wish I didn't have to know about issues like this.
I'm sure we all know about this topic. But I realized while watching this show that it's something that should be talked about more and I also realized that I don't know enough. But even more important - more needs to be done to protect our children.
This is not just about naked pictures of children. This is about the worst kind of sex acts done to children. Even very young children. This is about how widespread this epidemic is. Much worse than any of us can even imagine!
I have left the worst parts out of this article which I will share now. I just can't "speak loud" the words that describe some of the things that are being done to precious children all over the world. The entire article can be found here:
You need to read this even though it's painful to read! I didn't realize that our children are in danger of becoming pedofiles. Our children! You need to read this!
***
…It's estimated that more than 5 million pornographic pictures and videos of children are circulated on the Internet every day…
*
To help Americans understand the severity of the problem, Lisa Ling travels to Milton, Florida, to document the arrest of a suspected child pornographer…
*
When Lisa arrives at the office's CyberCrime Unit, she meets Chief Chuck McMullen, the man leading this operation.Chuck tells Lisa that the person they're after has been downloading and transmitting vile images of children being violently sexually abused."He's a higher-than-average user or possessor of child pornography," Chuck says. In just three weeks, police officers say they tracked more than 50 graphic images of child pornography to his home computer.
Though this bust is a step in the right direction, investigators say it won't even scratch the surface of this problem. Currently, the CyberCrime Unit is tracking thousands of cases in Florida alone…
*
Maureen Horkan, director of the Child Predator CyberCrime Unit, arrives on the scene and tells Lisa that pornography was being downloaded on a computer inside the home when the officers arrived."We have flat-out child pornography," she says. "[It's] child pornography that includes sexual conduct. Sexual conduct means penetration, means rape of children, means bondage with children. … It can be some of the most horrific stuff."After further investigation, the officers name the homeowners' 18-year-old son, a high school student, as their prime suspect. Officers pull him out of school and bring him home for questioning.
*
After searching the home, a forensic analyst tells Lisa they discovered several pornographic video files and homemade CDs containing graphic content in the teen's bedroom. They also confiscated four computers and multiple hard drives."These images show the rape and sexual torture of children in all varying stages," Chuck says. "I want the public to understand that these aren't just pictures."The 18-year-old was arrested, but the next day, he was released on bond. He pled not guilty to multiple child pornography charges…
*
Chuck says the suspect's parents were shocked by their son's arrest. "They were amazed because the search warrant says words like 'child pornography' and 'digital images,' and they didn't have any idea, because they knew they weren't involved in that," he says. "Then, once we told them that it was their son, they were very saddened, as any parent would be."Like most parents, Chuck says they want to protect their son, but they're also concerned about other children living in their home. "They have mixed emotions, obviously," he says. "They have other children in the house they also have to protect, so that puts them in a very difficult position."
What do parents need to know to keep their children safe? First, Maureen says moms and dads need to be aware of how much volume is out there and understand what their children are doing on their computers…
*
"I think the more knowledge we have about what's going on with predators and our children, the more we are prepared to take action against them," Oprah says.
*
Maureen Horkan, director of Florida's Child Predator CyberCrime Unit, shares a letter of caution for all parents.
The vast distribution of child pornography affects all of our children, in addition to the victims abused in the images. The huge volume of these sexual abuse images on the Internet affects normal everyday children because it is easily accessible by children in many of the normal computer activities they engage in every day.It is not difficult to find this material; you do not have to join a club or find a website. It is trafficked on free, Web-based software that most kids know all about and use regularly to find and download things like music and movies.Parents have to talk to their children about this material and the fact that is illegal and involves real children being abused. They need to ensure that we do not show up on their doorstep next with a search warrant.
*
In the three years since we started this initiative, we have gone to many homes expecting to find an adult and ended up finding a child.The consequences for our children are huge, and in every case where we find a child looking at these images, the parents had no idea. It is very likely that children would come across this material, and you can only imagine what the impact of that could be on them if they are still in the developmental stages. Exposing children to this material normalizes sexuality with and between children.This destroys them in so many ways. It objectifies sexuality, it makes it common that children can be used for sex, it normalizes violent sex and it externalizes sexual activity so they do not have to give or be emotionally present to participate. All of that is in addition to the fact that it exposes them to sex at such a young age. Normal adults who might see these images by accident (assuming they do not already harbor latent pedophilia) would be sick and not stimulated by the content, but children in developmental stages that see/use this material could be affected by it forever.They may be confused, act out similar abuse, possibly go to jail and be a registered sex offender forever.
*
***
How can anyone hurt children?!!! How is it that the guy who was arrested got released out on bond?!!! Why is it that pedofiles ever get out of jail?!!!! ("Sure" they are rehabilitated. Many of them are multiple offenders. They get out and do it again.) Why is it that we can't protect our children better?!!! Why do the offenders (too mild of a word for these EVIL, SICK people!!!) are given "a slap on the hand" and not put to death?!!!!!! Yes, you read that correctly. In my opinion, the worst crimes (premeditated murder, any heinous crimes against children...) should be punishable by death. Let them go and meet God and face His judgment after what they have done! If it's 100% sure they are guilty, then they do not deserve to live after what they have done. It is on each of our conscience if they go out and hurt a child again if we support the unsufficient laws/punishments for these crimes.
***
The only reason why I don't go insane when I think of things like this, is because I know that good will win in the end. Evil people will get their punishment. One day we don't have to put up with things like this anymore. Oh how I look forward to that day!!
***
"But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea."
Jesus Christ
(Matthew 18: 6)
***
That scripture talks about someone who causes a child to loose faith or leads a child astray. The word "offend" comes from a Greek word which means "cause to stumble". Can you imagine then, how God feels about someone who hurts children heinously?

When we lived in Lethbridge, we had a wisteria tree (suomeksi sinisade) like this right outside our kitchen window. I loved doing dishes/making supper while admiring the beautiful flowers. While I dream about a bigger house lot and not being able to look in my neighbors' kitchens, I thought I should plant a wisteria tree again right outside our kitchen window. Would do wonders for the view, don't you think?
To be honest, I don't care if someone can see into my kitchen. I ain't got nothing to hide. :) I'm not in the habit of keeping an eye on my neighbors either. But a bigger lot would still be nice. Mind you, it would mean more yard work too. Lately I've been totally into decked back yards though. Wood deck, sunbeds, and/or a hammock!, a trampoline, a grill, a firepit, huge modern flower pots (either with flowers or those funky grasses you see in magazines nowadays), a covered sandbox for Sienna... Who needs grass? I don't, it seems. Huh. Kind of surprised me when I realized that. There's a huge grass field right next to our house if I wanna see some grass. :) Which reminds me of an idea I had for Jay's birthday gift and totally forgot about it. I should just go get it anyways. Who cares if he gets it late. Man my memory sucks.

{what to read next?}

***
Just finished reading the Work & the Glory book series (9 thick books) for the second time. Cried for joy as the imaginary Steed family reunited in the Salt Lake valley. Awesome, awesome books! If anyone is ever interested in the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (= the mormons), then these are the books to read. They have made three movies of the book series too. Very fascinating. Very interesting. Me lovey, lovey, lovey!
Nauvoo, Illinois which our church members built after they were forced to leave their homes in Missouri, has always fascinated me. What an incredible story how out of a swamp a beautiful city was created. Out of poverty and persecution. I so want to go and visit Nauvoo one day.
***
Now I need to figure out what to read next. The Twilight books for the third time perhaps? :D Does anyone have any good book suggestions? I'm interested in books that are uplifting/interesting/mysterious or tell some kind of great story (f.ex. a historical novel) and have no swearing/sex/gory violence/disturbing scenes in it.
***
I think I'll share couple of fun, historical snippets of info from the W&G books.
First one is about "The New England Primer", a book that was used to teach children to read. It was first printed in the early 1700's. "It contained a hefty dose of prayers and pieties along with basic reading material... Many of the lessons, couched in verse to make them easier to memorize, were dour in their content and illustrated with pictures to match... For example, the letter F was taught with the rhyme, "The idle Fool is whipt at school," and a wicked-looking schoolmaster with a long switch proved the point. The Y entry suggested, that one ought to take one's happiness with a dose of gloom. Here a skeleton was shown arriving at a party of children."
Our school books have come a long way. :)
Another fun snippet of info was the reason for the word malaria.
"The shakes - or ague, as it was more commonly named - was something to be dreaded. So called because of the violent shaking that often occurred during the intermittent chills and fever, the sickness was found throughout the continent, but was especially prevalent in warmer climates and in areas which contained substantial wetlands. The fact that tiny protozoa which attacked the red blood cells and caused the debilitating infection were passed to humans from the bite of the female anopheles mosquito would not be discovered for another sixty years (closer to the end of 1800's). People attributed the ailment to the musty, foul-smelling odor caused by the rotting vegetation so common to swamps and marshes. Thus came its formal name - malaria - from two Italian words meaning, literally, "bad air".

{viikonloppu raportti}

***
Jayn synttaripaiva meni kivasti. Khm. :)
Leffan jalkeen haettiin Sienna & Robin ja mentiin syomaan thaimaalaista ruokaa. Olipa hyvaa.
Kotimatkalla haettiin kakku Costcosta - suklaavaahtokakku. Sitten Sienna vehnaallerginenkin saa syoda kakkua. Jay on laittamassa S:a nukkumaan ja sitten herkutellaan taas kakulla.
Tanaan imuroin kirkolla puolitoista tuntia. Kaikki luokat ja vahan kaytavaakin. Meidan seurakunnan vuoro lauantaisiivoukseen.
Olen nukkunut tosi huonosti viime aikoina joten nukuin parin tunnin paivaunet tanaan. Mut on kylla kirottu tai jotain sellaista nukkumisen suhteen. AINA on jotain mika estaa mua nukkumasta hyvin. Syyt vuorottelee: Sienna, kissat, Robin, fibromyalgia (kroppa sarkee alysti, kipulaakkeetkaan ei aina auta 100%)... Talla kertaa fibromyalgia ja allergiat on olleet syyna. Tiet on polyisia hiekan takia. Ovat jo onneksi alkaneet niita puhdistamaan. Lumen sulamisen jalkeen ilmassa on myos jonkinlaista hometta. Sellaista tama elama on. Aina jotain joka kenkuttaa.
Jay ja Sienna kavivat ostoksilla ja mina vihdoinkin taas sain kuitit laitettua Quickbooks accounting ohjelmaan seka reconciled tilit. Siihen menikin puolitoista tuntia myoskin.
Robin on Calgaryssa uimakilpailussa (vammaisten urheiluseura). Tulee vasta myohaan kotiin.
Nyt kakkua nassuun ja tv:ta tuijottamaan.

Our smoke alarm went off in the middle of the night. It was a false alarm. But afterwards I kept having nightmares about our house being on fire or us dying from carbon monoxide. In the morning I felt like a steamroller had run over me, I was so tired from the poor sleep.
I couldn't help but think what if our house really had been on fire. Are we prepared for an emergency? Well, I'm ashamed to admit that even though our church has taught about preparedness FOREVER now, our 72 hour emergency kit is only half done. If I don't get it finished in the next little while, I'm a rotten egg!

ps. A new poll on the right. My favorite season is fall. Early fall. When days are still warm and sunny (but not too hot), trees are gorgeous (love, love, love the fall colors!), no more bugs (yeah baby!)... On a day like that, I just want to stop time. It doesn't rain much here in Alberta so I even love the rainy days.

Ajattelin etta laittaisin tanne nama henkilokohtaisen historian kysymykset. Helppo tapa alkaa kirjoittamaan oma elaman historia (yksi kysymys kerrallaan silloin kun on aikaa). Taman voi antaa sukulaisille lahjaksi kivalla tavalla: pitaa vaan leikata kysymykset "liuskoiksi", rullata ne rullaksi, laittaa jonkinlaiseen kivaan kippoon namien kanssa. :)
Jokaisen elamassa on arvokasta tietoa jalkipolville.

This is what I get from being so excited about snowless yards. Last night a snow storm came from the north and all you see is WHITE when you look outside. Oh well, it's not like we're going anywhere today - Sienna hurt her ankle yesterday. It's not serious (no swelling...) but she won't walk on it as it hurts.
Good day to look at beautiful pictures of cherry trees. :) (pictures via google image search)
I'm sure the snow will melt quickly. The rest of the week is supposed to be nice and warm.
Taidanpa laittaa pannukakun uuniin.

Just watch the first 40 seconds. Nothing happens once the dog wakes up.

{easter weekend report}

***
Our Easter weekend so far (today is still a holiday):
+ Jay curled Sienna's hair yesterday. She looked so pretty.
- I got an eye infection from Robin and can't drive as I can't wear my contact lense.
+ Thank goodness it happened when Jay is home and can drive us.
+ And thank goodness I can see pretty well without a contact lense (ever since my cataract surgery to my injured eye).
+ Robin went to his mom's for the weekend. I cleaned his bathroom and for once it's staying clean for more than 10 minutes.
+ Went to feed the geese at the nearby pond. Honk, honk!
+ Jay and Sienna went swimming again.
+ The playground is clear of snow. Sienna was having so much fun playing there again.
+ The weather has been gorgeous. I only wore a t-shirt and was fine.
+ Our niece came to babysit and we got to go to a movie.
- The movie sucked. It was "Knowing" with Nicholas Cage and it was way too creapy for my liking. The preview didn't show that it would be creapy. We thought it would be that regular end of the world kind of action only.
- The popcorn sucked too - it tasted plasticy and old (we took it back for a refund after). I kept saying "I'm definately buying this sound track." I was sarcastic of course as the music was soooooo creepy.
+ Our niece brought Sienna cute souveniers from her trip to London/Paris.
+ Jay continues to build the second room in the basement. Got the closets done and is drywalling the walls now.
+ There is only a tiny bit of snow on our back yard which faces north. Front yard has been clear of snow for awhile now. Crocuses are starting to show up.
- They're saying we'll get a bit of snow tomorrow. :( Hope it melts right away.
+ Ate at Montana's.
+ Easter egg hunt and supper at Jay's parents.
+ Sienna was so excited when she woke up this morning as Easter Bunny had come. She had so much fun looking for eggs. She also got a summer flower dress, a Hello Kitty baseball cap and a tiger game.
- We have WAY TOO MUCH chocolate in our house once again. Lots more than in the picture as I had already put tons of it in Robin's room. Then Jay's parents showed up again today and gave us another paper bag full of treats (for me and Jay). I'm trying to think of people to give chocolate to.
+ Later today we'll do the Easter family home evening with the Easter Story eggs.

{the easter story}

***
Hoppy Easter!
Sienna has been tracing pictures using my light table. I'm amazed how well she is able to trace.
***
***
Had to come and quickly share this. I just got it done. We got together at my friend's house this past week to make these Easter themed family home evening kits. Jay had thrown away my egg carton so I had to wait to do mine later at home. But that was ok as I got to use the flower and bling bling that I had at home. :)
So, you get a see through egg carton, cut out scrapbook paper to fit inside the top flap. It's attached underneath with glue dots. I pierced a hole in the plastic and attached the flower on with a tiny brad and then covered it with the bling bling circle. The lettering was done on the paper.
***
***
Inside are instructions and the scriptures that go with each egg. The plastic eggs are numbered with a permanent marker.

We are going to hide these with the chocolate eggs and then later have a family home evening with them.
***
***
This is what is inside the eggs. Top two rows are eggs #1-6. Bottom two rows are eggs #7-12. You just open the eggs in number order and read the eggs and show what's inside. Fun and easy way to share the Easter story with little children. If you click on the picture, you'll be able to read the text.
***

For those of you who don't know: Latter-Day Saints hold a family home evening each Monday. Typical format: song, prayer, short lesson, game or activity, (song), prayer, treats.

Back to my Easter break. :)

{this & that as usual}

***
I thought I'd do one more posting before I take a little break to enjoy Easter.
After supper today we went to the nearby pond to feed the geese. It was fun to see them again and hear their honking. I picked some pussy willow & tree branches so that I could do this Finnish Easter tradition - feathers in tree branches. Hopefully the tree branches will start budding soon. Most Finns use colorful feathers but I had white ones and I must admit - this way is more my style.

I have always been interested in hand-writing analysis. I think there's something to it. I totally notice how my hand-writing changes depending on if I'm tired or not. Click on the pictures and start analyzing your hand-writing. Fun! I collected these ideas after reading an article about the topic in a magazine (years ago). I went shopping at West Edmonton Mall again yesterday and remembered to bring the camera so I can show you some more pictures. This is Europa Boulevard. Click on the pictures to see them better.

Looking to the other direction. The stuff protruding in the middle is part of the mini golf place on the lower level.

These frogs were near the big ship I showed last time. I think they were advertising an exhibition.

There would be more to see but I think this is enough pictures for now. There's an amusement park, Casino, a huge movie theater, Wild West shooting range, couple of big food courts, and of course tons and tons of shops. Personally I think that the mall needs a major reno to make it more modern again. But it is a fun place and we get tourists coming here just to visit the mall.

{+10Cish}

***
***
So, I hope I didn't scare all my readers away with the last posting. I always put a warning on these postings so you can skip them if you want to. :) And just so you know, I'm the only religious freak and LDS in my family. :)
***
Jay has a day off today and is taking Sienna swimming. I need to go find him birthday gifts. It gets harder and harder to think of gifts the longer you've been married. Guys are hard to buy for in the first place.
They've promised +10Cish weather all week. Yey. Hope the snow will be gone soon. About 3/4 of our front yard is grass now. Can't say the same about the back yard as it faces north. Roads are clear so now you can see all of the million potholes. Long, cold winter = million potholes. :(
Happy Monday everyone!

ps. Leftover Canadian pancakes + mashed banana + whipping cream for breakfast. Naughty me! :)

{warning: a very religious posting, feel free to skip if you don't want to read tons of religious stuff}

Now I feel the right Easter spirit. We have been watching our church's general conference on tv (I still can't believe that here in Canada I can watch it on tv instead of having to go to church and watch it via satellite). Every year, during the first Saturday and Sunday of April and October, our church holds a general conference that is broadcast to all the world. It is like a spiritual feast and afterwards you can't help but feel uplifted, edifyed and nourished spiritually. I so love these weekends! A wonderful spirit fills our home. It seems like the troubles and stresses of the world disappear for a moment and we get to think higher thoughts and see brighter views. I love the gospel of Jesus Christ so much. I am not ashamed to declare that to the whole world. I know it's not a popular thing to say nowadays. The world in general seems to have little regard for God and anything to do with religion. But I can't help but tell all that I love the gospel. I know that Jesus Christ was a real person who lived on earth and taught the way back to our Heavenly Father. I know that He is God's Son. I know that He organized a church and chose His twelve apostles to lead it with authority from Him. I know that due to persecusion and the state of the world in those days, the church crumbled and a great apostasy occured. People started to fight about doctrine, apostles were killed (and with them went the authority), people only relied on their own knowledge to understand the things of God. Many centuries of confusion followed. Look at the things that were done in the name of Christianity and you can't help but acknowledge that that is true. The pure knowledge of God and the gospel as Jesus taught it had been changed into human wisdom and human understanding. Often religion was only used to gain power and money. Then came the reformation times. Martin Luther and other very religious people noticed that the churches of their day didn't match the teachings of Christ in the Bible. They tried their best to "clean" and to "restore". Finally, in the 1800's, the world was once again ready for the fulness of the gospel. In America, people believed in freedom of religion. There was great new interest in religion. Many churches held meetings to sway people to join them. In Palmyra, New York, there was a humble farming family, the Smiths. Joseph Smith was at the time 14 years old and wanted to know which church to join. He went to various meetings and read the Bible to try to figure out what he should do. He was confused as all the churches taught so differently even though they all read the same Bible. One day he read in the Bible that if someone needed knowledge, they should ask God (James 1:5). He decided to do that. One spring morning, he went to a grove of trees and knelt down to pray. He wanted wisdom to know which church he should join. What happened surprised him and he would have never thought that he would get that kind of answer to his prayer. God and Jesus Christ appeared to this unlearned, poor farm boy. They told him that the church of Jesus Christ was not on earth at the moment. Many things happened after that. Shortly put, through Joseph, the original church of Jesus Christ was restored back to earth. Joseph was ministered by angels (no, they don't have wings, they are people God sends to do His work in this world). He was tutored, taught all he needed to know. He was given the priesthood which is the authority to teach the gospel and to perform the ordinances of it. He was told that there is a record hidden in a hill not far from where he lived, that contained the dealings of God with a people who used to live in the Americas (south & north). Joseph eventually translated that record and it's now called the Book of Mormon. It stands as a second witness that Jesus really is who the Bible tells Him to be: a Son of God, our Savior and Redeemer. It shows that God loves all His children and has shown a way to live that will bring them happiness and joy in this life and eternal life with Him in the next.

I hadn't planned to write all this. It all just came. Sometimes I just can't help but want to share what I have found. I truly, honestly believe that I belong to Jesus Christ's church. That the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is led by Jesus himself through a living prophet and apostles. The gospel is the same gospel as when He taught it to people. Many things that have been lost due to the apostasy, has been restored.

I know some people don't like it when a person shares religious beliefs. But I can't help it. The gospel has brought so much joy and happiness to me. Peace. Understanding about why things happen in the world and in my own life. Knowledge of who God is and why He put us here on earth. Knowledge that there really is a plan in progress. There is a purpose to all this we call life. Hope that this life and it's many miseries (illness, death, suffering and trials of any kind) is only temporary and that we learn from it all. After this life, there is much to look forward to. One day there won't be any more suffering. Good WILL win in the end.

I love the gospel. I love my Savior, Jesus Christ. I love prophet Joseph Smith and how humble he was and how willing to suffer for the gospel's sake. He was persecuted, imprisoned, mocked, harassed, beaten and eventually killed because he claimed what he claimed. I love the fact that I know that we have a prophet in our day who receives inspiration from God to teach us. I know that God lives. I know that He is the Father of our spirits, the soul that is in us. I know that He wants us to be happy. I know that because of what Jesus did, I can overcome death and sin and return back to Heavenly Father's presence one day to be forever with my family. I know that even though at first, some of the commandments that Jesus taught, seem restrictive, really aren't - they are meant to bring joy and happiness to us in this world. I know that each Sunday as I go to church, it helps me become a better person. I know that true, lasting peace is only possible when people turn to God. I know what it feels like to feel the Holy Spirit, the third member of the godhood. Words cannot describe those feelings and the joy that comes when you feel His influence in your life. I know that God listens to prayers and wants to guide us. I also know that we don't always see as God sees. He sees EVERYTHING, we only see this life and NOW.

I have written before how I found the gospel. You can find my story by clicking on the religion label. It's there somewhere in an old posting. I never in my life would have dreamt that I would become a religious person. Religion never interested me much. Now I realize that religion is fascinating and amazing. Learning more about God and His plan for us is exhilarating. If I could, I would want to share what I have found with every single person on this earth. I really would. When you have something precious, wouldn't you want to share? If you don't have a desire to share something, maybe you haven't found anything worth sharing yet. The gospel really can make you happy. That is why so many religious people want to share what they have found. Me included.

The gospel might not make sense right away, but give it a chance. It's like putting a puzzle together. You need many pieces to finally "see the picture". Don't give up. To get to know God is worth any effort and sacrifice you can make (time, looking foolish...).

s a n s k u :) loves the gospel and loves the fact that she loves the gospel. :)

So there. Now I'm sure I can go on for a bit again without mentioning the gospel. :)

ps. The video is part of one of President Gordon B. Hinckley's talks. A very uplifting story. President Hinckley has passed away. I so love him! He has been one of my favorite prophets of all time. His sense of humor, optimism, the way he loved his Marjorie (his wife)... When 9/11 happened it was him who cheered me up and helped me to have hope. His message brought me peace in the troubled world. I love him! He was a sweet, sweet man. And more than that - a prophet of God. God's humble servant.

Last week I took Sienna to gramma's and I got to spend an hour browsing at the scrapbooking store. It was heavenly going by myself and having the peace to look at everything. Surprisingly, not that much ended up in my shopping bag. To make up for it, I stopped at Fife n' Dekel and picked up half dozen apple cowpies. Mmmmm. :P
Many of the papers are displayed low at the scrapbook store and I was going up & down million times. Next day my hip and legs were so sore. Who needs to go to the gym. :)

These are my Easter eggs. I really liked the first ones I made. I don't think I would have done the giveaway if I had realized I couldn't find that same paper anymore. :) I find it hard to find earthy colored papers that I like. Luckily I still had this paper too. Fits our home perfectly.

Sienna will have an Easter surprise inside this bunny box.

As you can see, I put those newly purchased papers to good use already. I need to go buy some more of the same papers.

Just a quick note... I left comments for everyone in the giveaway posting. I still wish I could send stuff for everyone. More giveaways to come in the future for sure.

What a fun Friday it's been so far. I took Sienna to Gymboree's sports class (free trial today). I was so impressed by the place as it was very clean and tidy. I enrolled Sienna in the class right away. It'll be every Friday and we also get to go play in the gym every Tuesday if we want to. I couldn't believe how much better Sienna was at catching and throwing the ball even though she was one of the younger ones. I guess it's because we always play with balloons and balls. Sienna loves it.
Then we went to a mall. Sienna and I looked around, she rode the horse carousel, played in the science store. Then we got some juice and shared a banana and some chocolate (well, lots of chocolate I should say :)). Jay got off work early and took Sienna with him and I got to shop for clothes. I found a skirt and FOUR tops. I was so excited as I'm pretty picky and usually have a hard time finding anything I like. I lost some weight when I was sick for 6 weeks and it wasn't as painful to go clothing shopping this time. :) Hope I won't gain it back.
Afterwards we picked up Robin and went to Red Brick Pizza again for some BBQ chicken pizza and gelato. Yum!
Now I'm off to watch Slumdog Millionaire. Everyone's said it's a good movie. Get to cuddle with my Jay. Y
Happy Friday everyone!

Anne!
I so wish I could send everyone their own set of Easter decorations. In fact, when I realized that I wasn't getting that many comments after all (it's spring break here and in the States, not the best time to hope for comments), I thought of surprising all of you by saying you were all winners. But I've been making more of them and realized that I'm getting quite sick of doing the same thing over and over again. So, I'm sorry my dear, dear blogging friends (old and new) who commented and cheered me up.
Anne is the lucky one for these reasons:
1. I know she's going through something that is very difficult and emotionally draining. Her wait for something precious might be very long but now she has something she only has to wait for a short time.
2. I totally feel for her as her own decorations didn't turn out. The time you take to make something and then it not working out. Bummer. Hope these decorations will make up for her loss.
3. She said that the colors are just perfect for her home.
***
I really, really wish that I could send these to all of you but I will do more giveaways in the future to give more people a chance to win.
And yes, Connie & Suvi will get their own eggs too. I can't say no to family and to a longtime best friend. After I'm done making theirs, I'm quite sure I don't want to see any more eggs. :)
